Walk with us on the shores of the Lake Avernus and enjoy this mythical place, far from the city.
It was born from the ashes of a volcano and is the only freshwater lake among the four Phlegraean lakes. The name comes from the Greek aornon, without birds, since in ancient times sulphurous exhalations drove away birds. It was believed to be a magical and untouchable place during the Greek rule, then desecrated by the Romans with the construction of the Portus Julius. Poet Virgil described it as the door to hell that Aeneas crossed to go to the Kingdom of the Dead.
Today, however, with the exhaustion of volcanic activity, it has become one of the richest environments of avifauna in Naples. On its shores we can also admire the Temple of Apollo and the charming Grotto della Sibilla.
Visit Campi Flegrei was born to promote the Campania territory, rich in history, culture and natural beauty. Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Mount Procida, the islands of Gulf of Naples are magical places to live and tell, between sky and sea, where poets and scholars of all ages have been enchanted. Audiovisual paths, photographic tours, historical and naturalistic itineraries will make you discover all the wonders of this land.
