Walk with us one of the most evocative paths of the Phlegraean Fields, the Descent into Hell. The name derives precisely from the ancient Greco-Roman myth that identified the Lake Avernus like the door to the Kingdom of Hell.
You will start from the slopes of Mount New, the youngest volcano in Europe, now extinct. You will cross the fragrant pine forest and the Mediterranean scrub that surrounds the fumarole area. Once you reach the top you can look out into the volcano's crater and admire the wonderful panorama of the area.
From here your descent towards the underworld will begin, through an oak forest to the banks of the Lake Avernus. The lake is located inside an extinct volcano that originated 4000 years ago and is now a very important nesting and wintering site for birds.
