Benevento

Benevento

Known to most people as the city of witches, Benevento is a town rich in history and culture. Initially called Maloenton by the Samnites, in Latin Maleventum, when it was conquered by the Romans it was renamed Beneventum, to replace the old name considered fatal. Are you a passionate about history? Benevento is rich in ancient monuments such as the Arch of Trajan, erected to celebrate the extension of the Appian Way and the Roman Theatre, wanted by the Emperor Hadrian. The Church of Santa Sofia with its frescoes and the Museum of Sannio are also worth a visit. Do you love shopping? In the town centre there are boutiques with big brands but also small shops. There are plenty of places to hang out with friends all year round. Benevento is also famous for its excellent food and wine: fine wines such as aglianico and falanghina but also the liquore Strega, produced by the Alberti family since 1860. Near the ancient Maleventum we also find Sant'Agata de' Goti, one of the most beautiful villages in the area and the Lake of Telese, not far from the baths of the same name. Do not forget the Grassano Park in San Salvatore Telesino, a nature park near Telese Terme, perfect for nature lovers.
