Walking tours
The tour starts from the upper part of Salerno's old town, an area once rich in springs and known in the Middle Ages as Plaium Montis. Here, for more than seven centuries, stands the Minerva Garden, extraordinary testimony to the medical tradition of the "City of Hippocrates," whose highest expression was the famous Salerno Medical School, considered the oldest institution of its kind in the West.
The garden is divided into several terraces, embellished with pools and fountains, connected by a charming staircase with a pergola. An enchanting view opens from the belvedere, ideal for a rejuvenating break with a tasting of herbal teas prepared with local herbs.
The route continues along the pedestrian streets of the historic center to the Cathedral of St. Matthew, erected in the 11th century after the Norman conquest of the city. The exterior features a Romanesque bell tower, monumental double flight of steps and the Lion's Gate, which leads to the large quadriporticus, the basilica's ancient atrium. Inside, precious mosaics decorate the amboes and floor, while the extraordinary Baroque crypt guards the relics of the patron saint.
From here we descend along Merchants Street, the historic city thoroughfare, to the Fornelle district, where the Author Walls transform the neighborhood into an open-air art gallery: murals and poems, created by young street artists, pay homage to Alfonso Gatto's verses, bringing them back to the streets of his hometown.
The visit concludes in a quaint downtown store, with the presentation and tasting of typical products from Campania, including the renowned Colatura di Alici di Cetara.
Upon request, the tour can extend to the whole day, with lunch and a visit to the picturesque Arechi Castle, overlooking Salerno from the top of its medieval ramparts.
