About this activity

Today Miliscola is a hamlet between the towns of Bacoli and Monte di Procida, in the Campi Flegrei. The beach of the same name stretches for about 2 km overlooking the Procida Channel, and is ringed by Cape Miseno at its opposite end.

The coastline meets with that of Miseno, has very clear water and a wonderful view even of the islands of Ischia, Procida and the gulf of Naples.

Artificial reefs have been built not far from the shore, and the seabed is sloping, but deep water is not immediately reached, so it is also a suitable beach for families with children who would like to spend a pleasant day without any particular worries.

There are many lidos, some of which also organize music and dance nights on the beach, while the free, public beach area is quite small.

There is no shortage of bars and restaurants nearby, as well as several lidos that double as venues designed to stop for lunch and dinner, ceremonies, or simply to relax with an aperitif in front of a breathtaking sunset.

For lovers of the sports, some establishments between Miseno and Miliscola organize sports activities to fully enjoy the sea, including kayak courses, wave surfing, traditional sup, yoga sup, sailing courses for children and adults, and kitesurfing.

This maritime area is very busy in the summer, so it is advisable to leave early in the morning to take advantage of the quieter hours before a crowd of swimmers arrives, especially in July and August, but even in other seasons it is pleasant to stroll along the shore: in fact, we recommend that you wait the sunset, as the sky is tinged with pink and orange hues and it is the best time of day to witness the spectacular meeting of the sky and the sea.

Curiosities about Miliscola beach

For the first time in Europe, a work of high civil engineering was inaugurated precisely in Miliscola: the construction of the first undersea aqueduct, designed to supply the water system of the Phlegrean islands.

The project was implemented in 1957 thanks to the previous approval of the Council of Ministers and funding from the Cassa del Mezzogiorno.

A construction site was built at Miliscola with substantial soil removal to accommodate pipes and columns useful for the planned routes to the island of Procida.

Miliscola beach was chosen as a cozy backdrop for a well-known cinematic kiss in the film Sorry for the delay by Massimo Troisi, during a winter morning when the grayness of the sky did not suffocate the beauty of the sea or upset the romance of the scene, on the contrary, it made it less obvious and more realistic.

History of Miliscola

Formerly the seat of the military school of the Roman Empire, the name itself derives from the Latin militum schola, meaning school of soldiers: the geographical proximity between Miliscola and the port of Miseno where the classis misenensis, that is, the largest Roman fleet in the Mediterranean, made it the ideal area to introduce the military academy.

Even today there are patches of beach that are named after the various branches of the national weapon as in the late twentieth century the Navy, the Air Force and the Italian Army have decided to carve out dedicated spaces for military personnel and their families; recently the mayor was asked to open areas for Bacoli residents as well.
