About this tour

Much like Forcella and the Quartieri Spagnoli, Rione Sanità is often pointed to as a dangerous and infamous suburb of Naples, but the reality is that this area has so much to offer Italian and foreign tourists alike. In fact, it is an extremely lively neighborhood, and it is here that you can really capture the soul of Neapolitan culture and art. So why not purchase a'guided excursion in the Sanità district?
The latter was built at the end of the 16th century near a valley outside the city walls and was employed as a burial site. The reference to sanitation in the name refers to the healthfulness of the area as it was virtually untouched at the time and several miraculous healings were reported within its catacombs.
Rione Sanità is located north of the historic center of Naples, near the hill of Capodimonte. The walking tour starts from Porta San Gennaro to Via Foria, which in the past was the only entry point from the northern side of the city. From here, continue on Via Vergini, a narrow street crowded with stalls and small stores, and then reach Piazza Sanità, where street art works by Francisco Bosoletti and Tono Cruz can be seen.
Next you will also see the Basilica of Santa Maria alla Sanità, erected in the early 17th century above the catacombs of San Gaudioso. Next, you cannot miss a trip to the Totò's House you will encounter on Via Santa Maria Antesaecula. This is the exact place where Antonio De Curtis, also known as Totò, was born in 1898. It is easy to recognize as the building features a splendid portrait of the actor done by Fabio Borrelli, a famous designer and tattoo artist. In the area you will also find the Concettina pizzeria at the Three Saints, where you can taste its exceptional Neapolitan pizza. You can eat here either before or after the tour, at your discretion.
Finally, the tour continues to the Palace of the Spagnuolo, so called because in the 19th century it belonged to a Spanish noble family. If you too can't wait to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Rione Sanità, all you have to do is book the experience!

    How to reach the meeting point by car

    From Piazza Garibaldi take Corso Garibaldi and continue on Via Rosaroll. After 800 meters turn left onto Via Foria. After 300 meters enter Piazza Cavour. At 400 meters there is Porta San Gennaro.

    How to reach the meeting point by public transportation

    From Piazza Garibaldi take Metro Line 2 and get off at the Piazza Cavour stop. Exit the station and walk to Porta San Gennaro on Via Porta San Gennaro.
