About this tour

One of the main attractions on the island of Ischia are the beautiful La Mortella Gardens that meet in the municipality of Forio. With this guided tour you can admire the magnificence of an extraordinary botanical garden composed of some of the most original plant species in the world.

La Mortella Gardens are a small natural jewel of Ischia, created in 1956 by the passion and genius of English composer Sir William Walton and his wife Lady Susana. The couple moved to the Campanian island after World War II, building from scratch this beautiful garden that is home to a rich variety of very rare Mediterranean and exotic plants. Today a special foundation manages the gardens, and art programs and concerts are also held here.

Inside the botanical garden you can visit the museum dedicated to Sir Walton's sheet music and a puppet theater. During the excursion you will be accompanied by an expert guide who will allow you to learn the history of the place and the significance of each plant. You will see gushing fountains, terraced gardens, and panoramic views overlooking the sea.

In addition, you will get to see a amphitheater outdoor built on the hillside that in summer hosts musical performances and concerts and can accommodate up to 400 people.

How to get there

How to reach the meeting point by car

Departing from Napoli Centrale, as you exit the station, head toward Piazza Garibaldi and follow the signs for the A1/A3 highway. Head toward the Port of Naples and take the "Napoli Porto" exit, following the signs for the port (Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa).Once at the port, park your car at one of the available parking lots near the embarkations.From the port of Naples, take a ferry or hydrofoil to Ischia. The main companies are Medmar, Caremar and Alilauro. Hydrofoils take about 50 minutes, while ferries take about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How to get to La mortella Gardens by public transportation

By Bus from Ischia Porto or Casamicciola CD or CS line. Take the bus from the Ischia Porto or Casamicciola station. Get off at the stop "Giardini La Mortella" or "San Francesco al Monte." Travel time: About 30 minutes from Ischia Porto and 20 minutes from Casamicciola.
