The Natural Historical Archaeological Park of the rock churches of Materano is also known as the Murgia Materana Park and is a wonderful protected area in Basilicata, formally established in 1990. The reserve embraces the territory of the city of Matera and its surroundings along a vast limestone plateau.

This area of Basilicata abutting Apulia has been inhabited since the distant Paleolithic, as evidenced by the Stones of Matera, dwellings carved into the rock, and the 150 rock churches that dot these lands. In fact, since the Middle Ages the area has been populated by various Byzantine and Benedictine monastic communities who made the stones their places of worship.

So if you want to learn more about a region so rich in treasures, all you have to do is join this fun tour in the Murgia Park. The activity starts in the late afternoon from Matteotti Square Or from the Government House.

On board a shuttle you will see some of the most striking rock churches from the outside. Following this, you will also observe the entrenched villages, or ancient inhabited villages surrounded by trenches dug for defensive purposes. You will then have the opportunity to take a wonderful nature walk in the heart of Matera and enjoy a spectacular breathtaking view of the illuminated Sassi after sunset.

How to reach the meeting point by car

From Piazza Garibaldi in Naples take Corso Lucci and Via Ferraris to enter the A3. After 3 km take the exit for A1/E45 and enter the A16/E842. Continue for 127 km and take the exit for Candela. After 200 meters turn into SP95 and enter SS655. Continue for 112 km and enter SP8. Advance on Via Timmari, Via Passarelli, Via de Robertis, Viale Aldo Moro and Via Fratelli Rosselli. Then turn right onto Via Spine Bianche, Via De Viti De Marco and Via Roma. Finally, continue to Piazza Matteotti.

How to reach the meeting point by public transportation

From Naples Central Station take the bus to Matera. From Via D. Sturzo continue on foot on Via Bramante, Via Alighieri and Via La Malfa. At the traffic circle take the fourth exit and turn into Piazza della Visitazione. To finish, turn left into Piazza Matteotti.
