About this tour

Historical center tour of Matera

Heritage of theUNESCO since 1993, the Sassi di Matera represent one of the most iconic and distinctive places in the world. They are rock-hewn constructions carved into the rock along an area of 32 hectares protected by the Natural Historical Archaeological Park of the Rock Churches of Matera.
The Sassi are connected to the center of the Lucanian city by many accesses that link the ancient districts to the more modern area. These archaic urban settlements date back to thepaleolithic era, when local residents began shaping the tuff rock to make their homes.
From the Middle Ages onward, the Sassi were also used to house places of Christian worship that can still be admired today. Actually, the expression "Sassi" also refers to the two main neighborhoods that make up the historic center of Matera, the Civita and the Piano. Right around the Civita are the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso.
So if you want to visit the beauty of Matera, you cannot miss this fantastic guided tour that allows you to see the city's most beautiful Sassi and rock churches. The tour kicks off from Vittorio Veneto Square at 9:00 a.m. and over the course of 2 1/2 hours allows you to see Via Beccherie, Piazza Duomo, Via Muro, Santa Maria de Idris, San Giovanni in Monterrone, the Barbarian Cemetery and the Neighborhood Cave House.

Tour of the two Sassi: journey of discovery of Matera

Matera is one of the main destinations for those wishing to visit the natural and historical beauty of the Basilicata. The town in Lucania, in fact, is renowned for the presence of the so-called Sassi, or ancient dwellings carved in stone that date back to the Paleolithic age.
Some of these buildings were also used as cave churches, inside which you can still see the remains of paintings and altars. To enjoy all this, don't miss this fascinating guided tour that will take you around the Stones of Matera. The excursion starts from Vittorio Veneto Square and from there you will move to San Giovanni Square and the Church of San Pietro Barisano, the largest in the city.
Next, you will be able to see the Neighborhood Cave House in Via Purgatorio, where you will learn about the living habits of the peasants who lived in the Sassi until the 1950s. You will then continue to the church of Santa Maria de Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone. Finally, you will arrive at Pascoli Square to end the experience with a spectacular view of the Sasso Caveoso.
