About this tour

The Mirabilis Pool is a beautiful archaeological site from the Roman era that can be admired in the municipality of Bacoli. To visit it, we offer a guided excursion that will allow you to learn all the secrets and curiosities about this fascinating place.
Built in the Augustan age on the northwest side of the Gulf of Naples, the Piscina Mirabilis originally served as a drinking water cistern. Today it represents the second largest cistern built by the Romans after the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul and served to supply water to the many ships that made up the Classis Misenensis Of the Roman navy. Instead, the name Piscina Mirabilis was given to it in the late seventeenth century.
The Piscina Mirabilis was thus the final reservoir of one of the most important Roman aqueducts, theAugustan Aqueduct, which transported the waters of Serino to Naples and the Phlegraean Fields. It was entirely excavated in the tuff of the hill that rises in front of the port and has a capacity of more than 12,000 cubic meters.
A barrel-vaulted ceiling supported by 48 cruciform-section pillars can be seen at the top. The wall structure was developed in opus reticulatum and is lined with waterproofing material. At the bottom then is a 20×5-meter limaria pool that was formerly used as a periodic settling and emptying tank.

    Fantastic experience

In the highest part of the municipality of Bacoli is this gigantic water cistern (the name "Piscina" was given in the 17th century). Completely excavated in tuff and covered with waterproofing material, it consists of numerous compartments. Present are a large number of pillars supporting the large barrel vaults; it could hold several hundred thousand liters of water and also had a system for emptying and cleaning. A tour not to be missed!

A fantastic visit with the guide. He took us on a journey about myth, reminding us of the Latin origin of so many words and enhancing the Campi Flegrei area with passion, irony and simplicity. Highly recommended to everyone.
