Castle Mountain is definitely the symbol historical and cultural of Cava de' Tirreni. It is the place where every year, on the Octave of the Corpus Christi, is home to the festival of the same name commemorating the miracle of SS. Blessed Sacrament, in which the parish priest surviving Don Angelo Franco arrested the plague who digressed to Naples in 1656 with a procession Eucharistic.
On this day the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from the castle to the four districts "de La Cava" takes place, and for three days the streets of the city are animated by parades, arquebusiers, ladies, knights and flag-wavers.
Regarding the foundation of the castle, there are divergent ideas: many say that it was built in 773 by Arechi II, prince by Benevento, with the aim of defending the Lombard duchy from a possible attack by Charlemagne, building this and four other fortifications, reinforced by towers, ramparts and walls, extending over a very large territory. Still others believe the origins date back to the 9th century to defend against the Saracens. What is not in doubt is that the castle was given by Duke Roger to his son Robert in the late 11th century.
Until 1500 the complex had no name; only later was the entire defensive array named "Castrum Sancti Adiutoris" thanks to the Holy Who had given his name to the surrounding land.
But the story does not end there. In 1110 it was purchased by the Holy Trinity Monastery, becoming the home of a monk and a layman at the head of the garrisons placed in defense of the city. After suffering destruction in 1291 at the behest of Charles II of Anjou, came back to life in 1380 with the obligation for citizens to pay a tax for its maintenance. From this time on, the fortress served as a military post until the World War II, particularly until 1943: i Germans occupied it favored by the strategic location with cannon sights on Vietri, through which they were able to slow down the advance of the allies who landed at Salerno.
As a consequence of its living began the decay of the structure, mainly caused by the countless bombings of the world conflict. It was not until 1970 that the site was retaken and restored. In 2010, during some Archaeological excavations of redevelopment, a coin Norman era used by the Byzantines and longobardi, the follaro.
From the Castle, which protects and watches over Cava from the height of its hill, you can enjoy a wide panorama over the entire city. Inside it presents a chapel and, to the south, the remains of what was once a tower of observation and of the walls. On the eastern side you can notice two ramparts, barracks and curtains. You can take advantage of the days when the local holiday falls to admire the fireworks From the top of Castle Mountain.
The Castle is home to mysterious stories: it is said that somewhere hides a underground passage secret between Cava Castle and Salerno Castle, and that in the cistern Of the Castle died an old witch which, according to the legend, from time to time suddenly reappears; this legend originates from an event recorded in the records of the SS. Annunziata Church, according to which the person who drowned on January 9, 1729, was actually a hermit of the castle, Friar Antonio Micano. Still others, however, say that somewhere in the fortress is concealed an ancient treasure, but not much is known in this regard.
