Serrara Fontana is a small coastal municipality in theisland of Ischia, the only municipality on the island that connects from the sea with the village of Sant'Angelo, up to the highest peak of the island where we find the Falanga, a beautiful enchanted forest consisting of a chestnut grove about 600 meters above sea level. Serrara Fontana borders the municipality of Casamicciola, Forio, e Barano d'Ischia.
A locality with an almost solely agricultural economy, it is composed of two villages, Serrara, the main town, and Fontana, clambering up the slopes and along the Mount Epomeo About 400 meters above sea level.
Place names indicate the presence of man since prehistoric times, also corroborated by archaeological findings, dating from the Iron Age to the Magna Graecia period, to the Hellenistic period and then to the Middle Ages.
Just from the Middle Ages dates the name Fontana, due to the presence of a copious source of drinking water. The name Serrara, on the other hand, is more recent and stands for mountainous.
Serrara Fontana is ideal for spending moments of pure relaxation in one of the most beautiful villages in the Mediterranean. Characteristic is the small port of St. Angel with many small colorful houses leaning against each other on the tufa ridge of the mountain, overlooking the wonderful panorama of the crystal clear sea of Ischia.
Here you can enjoy local delicacies while sitting comfortably in the open air away from the city chaos because Sant'Angelo is a pedestrian island.
In Serrara Fontana it is possible to take long and relaxing walks, thermal baths, visit wonderful places and tourist itineraries.
Nature lovers can visit the Hermitage of St. Nicholas, an important rock church on the island of Ischia located on the summit of the Mount Epomeo, reachable only on foot through a mountain path where you can admire the breathtaking landscapes of the island, from Sant'Angelo to Emperor's Point, up to the Maronti And in the background with any luck on a clearer day. Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula.
The history of the church has its origins in the ancient past; according to records, the Hermitage existed as early as 1459 and was a refuge for Saracen invasions for centuries, while the convent cells were built in 1587.
The noblewoman Beatrice Quadra wanted to make it a retreat for nuns, but they could not withstand the harsh climate and abandoned the hermitage. Inside the church we can admire the chapel of relics, which dates back to the mid-18th century and where there are a hundred niches containing jars with ancient human remains of saints and blesseds.
A terracotta statue of St. Joseph and a Dying Christ, by a sculptor from Campania dated in 1500, can also be seen.
Cavascura is a rock-cut thermal basin carved out of a valley a few meters from the Maronti beach, considered the most famous on Ischia.
It is a thermal hall divided between the sunshine of the brooms, thick bushes, chestnut trees, leaves and the darkness of the caves. Cavascura's waters are particularly healing.
Also the Cava Grado beach Is a place not to be missed. A corner with an emerald green sea. The beach is small but gives a beautiful view, with a glimpse of the so-called Tower, a tuffaceous islet connected by a small isthmus of land to the small square of Sant'Angelo.
For those who want to see a beautiful sunset, the most scenic spot is the Belvedere di Serrara, which offers a magnificent view of the southern side of the island and mainly of the village of Sant'Angelo.
As famous as the lookout, here too you can see a view that is not so easily forgotten with the Gulf of Naples, l'Vivara Island and Procida.
In Serrara Fontana it is possible to walk the path of the Water Stone, named for a large tuffaceous block that in ancient times the farmers of Serrara Fontana dug inside to make a cistern for collecting rainwater that the farmers used to irrigate the cultivated fields in the surrounding area. This immense rock gives us an understanding of how man, in order to survive, is ingenious and makes the most of his land to obtain the necessary food.
Continuing along the trail, you will reach the top of Mt. Epomeo where you can see the towns of Forio, Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola.
Many are the traditions of this place, such as home wine, home gardens, and the earthy gastronomy of local restaurants. The citizens of this place have a great passion for horses, a legacy of the ancient trade of the pacifier, a central figure in the former agricultural economy of the island of Ischia, who transported grapes for the harvest and loaded barrels of wine onto ships leaving for the mainland.
In Serrara Fontana you get lost in nature, forget about the chaos of car noise, it is the ideal destination for those who want to fight the stress of everyday city life and dive into wonderful scenery and breathtaking landscapes.
