About this activity

On the most extreme part of the Phlegrean peninsula, there is Monte di Procida also known as the Terrace of the Phlegrean Fields. Among its beautiful inlets is the small and wonderful Acquamorta Beach. This is a small beach with a marina that overlooks Procida. From here the island seems so close that it can be reached by reaching out a hand.

Why visit Acquamorta Beach

A favorite destination for lovers, the little beach offers breathtaking and romantic scenery, especially in the dawn and dusk light. Its calm waters are not swimmable but it is possible to stroll on its quaint little harbor. Looking to the right from its harbor you can see the islet of San Martino, just opposite the islands of Ischia and Procida, on the left you can see the island of Capri. In the evening, the harbor, bordered by two piers and with fishing and boating functions, is illuminated and you can walk around it. There are two chalets on the road and a small play area for children. In short, it is the best place for an atmospheric quiet stroll away from the hustle and bustle.

The legend of the lovers

The story is told of Acqua, a charming girl, daughter of the owner of the land located above the ridge. One day, taking advantage of the distraction of her father who was controlling her estate, Acqua went to the beach to take a swim. Between dips she wandered too far out to sea where a wave, almost drowned her. When she awoke, she found herself in the small boat of Joshua, a Procidan fisherman who had seen her and rescued her. Returning to the beach they told each other how they felt at home just by looking at the sea. When they reached the arena, the two said goodbye to each other, but every day since then Acqua greeted Joshua when she saw him dock at their beach. Then, one day, the fisherman did not come again and word spread that a strong storm had killed him. When Water learned this news it is said that he went to the sea and never returned. From then on the beach took the name "Dead Water."

The most important things to know about Acquamorta Beach

Its calm waters, bounded between the two piers of the marina, do not experience strong currents but are not swimmable.

Curiosities about Acquamorta Beach

During the Greco-Roman period, Monte di Procida became an important strategic hub for trade in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This was possible not only because of its location but also and especially because of the calm waters of its small harbor, which allowed for numerous movements of fleets.

During the 1970s and 1980s, some entrepreneurs imported the concept of American fast food to Monte di Procida. Thus the American cheese steak was reworked and placed side by side with the culinary tradition of Monte di Procida, giving birth to Cistecca di Monte di Procida in 1984.
