About this tour

The Macellum of Pozzuoli is a beautiful archaeological site located in the heart of the city of Pozzuoli and is one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Italy. To visit it you can purchase this fantastic guided tour that will give you an absolutely unique experience.
For a long time the facility has been called the "Temple of Serapis" because of the discovery of a statue of the Egyptian god of the same name in 1750, when the very first excavations were carried out in the area. Subsequent investigations later determined that it was actually a macellum, or public food market in ancient Puteoli.
The area would have been so well preserved also thanks to the geological phenomenon of bradyseism, typical of the Phlegraean Fields. Dating from the late Flavian age (1st or 2nd century AD), the macellum was located within a commercial area, the so-called "emporium."
The plan of the macellum is reminiscent of that of other cities such as Rome, Pompeii, Morgantina, and Cremna. It is presented as a wide square yard surrounded by a portico overlooked by market stores. There are two latrines on either side of the back apse and the remains of two staircases that led to the upper floor of the arcade. Also, in the center of this space can be seen an elevated building of circular shape.
Before or after your guided tour of Pozzuoli's Macellum, you can also take advantage of it and purchase a ticket to see Puteoli Sacra which is located a short distance away.
