A well-known tourist center in the province of Brindisi, Ostuni stands on three small hills in the Itria Valley. Known as the White City, it can boast a splendid medieval town, full of narrow streets and whitewashed houses in a dense maze vaguely reminiscent of an Arab casbah. The old town is called "the land" to distinguish it from the seaside area.
The most magical aspect of Ostuni is related precisely to the characteristic white lime-painting of the houses in the historic center, a custom still in vogue today among residents. Here one can admire the Co-cathedral built in the 15th century in Romanesque-Gothic style. Walking along Via Cattedrale is then the former Carmelite Monastery, which houses the Museum of Preclassic Civilizations of the Southern Murgia, where it is possible to see the cast of Delia, a pregnant woman who lived about 25,000 years ago.
Instead, in Blessed John Paul II Square are located historical monuments such as the Bishop's Palace and the Old Seminary, linked by the beautiful Scoppa Arch. Also very interesting is the Palazzo dell'Episcopio, where there is the Diocesan Museum that displays the important artistic heritage of Ostuni.
Other churches and noble palaces are located in the old town gathered within the Aragonese walls, signaled by Porta San Demetrio and Porta Nova. Ostuni's agricultural area is then populated by many farms, some of which have been converted into luxury resorts and agritourisms. Among the most famous are Santa Caterina, Lo Spagnuolo and Masseria Cappuccini.
