About this activity

Snorkeling in Submerged Bay

Live a unique experience between sea and archaeology: explore the Baia Underwater Park by snorkeling with us, accompanied by instructors, archaeologists and licensed guides.
You'll swim among ancient mosaics, statues and perfectly preserved Roman ruins just a few meters deep at the emperors' favorite spot for the "Ozi di Baia."
A journey through time among history, nature and wonder!

A unique site in the world

Over the past 2,000 years, the phenomenon of bradyseism has caused the Roman coastline to sink 6-8 meters. Baia, famous since the 2nd century B.C. for its climate and hot springs, was a favorite destination of the Roman aristocracy and emperors.

In the 4th century AD, the slow sinking began, leading to the abandonment of the villas, which can be seen today in the sunken park. In 1969, two statues depicting Ulysses and Polyphemus were found at Punta Epitaffio. Excavations in the 1980s unearthed a nymphaeum-triclinium, now on display at Baia Castle.

The park also includes important sites such as Portus Iulius, the Villa of the Pisonians, and the Villa at Protiro.

What to see in Submerged Bay

Portus Iulius

Built in 37 B.C. as a military port, it was soon converted into a spa and residential area. Resurfaced thanks to World War II aerial photos, it is now partly visitable, with warehouses and a manor house visible on the seabed.

Villa of the Pisoni

Discovered in the late 1960s, it is a 1st-century AD residence arranged around a central courtyard and equipped with landing basins. The guided underwater tour takes about 45 minutes and runs at a maximum depth of 6 meters.

Villa in Protiro

It overlooks a basin with a double row of piers. The 120-meter-long villa was preceded by workshops and divided into thermal and residential areas. It houses marbles, frescoes, columns, and a hexagonal black-and-white mosaic. A guided itinerary for divers also operates here.
