About this activity

The municipality of Ischia is divided into two localities: Ischia Ponte and Ischia Porto. Here, as its name implies, is the characteristic circular-shaped port where hydrofoils, ferries, private boats and fishing boats arrive. It is the liveliest resort on the island with restaurants, bars and stores. According to legend, King Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1854, after falling into the water while boarding his ship, decided to create the port, a safer place for ships to dock. After only a year it was already inaugurated and revolutionized the entire economy of the island. It was formerly a lake, called Lake of the Borgo, Lake of the Bath or Pantaniello, which originated from an ancient crater, sunk by an earthquake and filled with water. It contains within it a small island, the Tondo, known as Marco Aurelio's because it was mentioned by him in person.

It is one of the smallest islands in the world, with only a few meters in diameter, and Marcus Aurelius was very intrigued by this piece of land. Talking to his preceptor Marcus Cornelius Fronton wondered why there was an island within an island, he answered him in a very original way by saying: just as the big island protects the small island, the emperor father protects the prince from the concerns of the government.

Why visit Ischia Porto

It is the perfect place to stay if you are looking for relaxation and fun. Starting from the port, walking along Via Quercia will take you to Ancient Palace Square where you can admire the ancient Royal Palace And enjoy a good ice cream. Immediately to the left is the Riva Droite, right side of the harbor, is the ideal place to enjoy an aperitif by the sea. Continuing your stroll, you will walk along Via Roma and then the Corso Vittoria Colonna. pedestrian street at night, full of stores and stores open until late for shopping and buying many quaint souvenirs.

Two important churches, the Church of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo and the Church of St. Peter, are also located in this area.

The Church of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo

Near the harbor, it is the first monument a tourist can admire as soon as he or she disembarks in Ischia, as if welcoming the traveler after the crossing. It was part of the land development project financed by the Bourbon royal house: it was inserted in a particular landscape-environmental setting, overlooking the harbor and protected behind by the evergreen hill of the Montagnon. Unlike other Ischitan churches, it has no churchyard dividing exterior and interior but an imposing Greek-style colonnade. It is two-story, with three naves and a Latin cross plan: in each nave there is an altar with a canvas, in the left one the Vision of St. Jude Thaddeus, protector of hopeless causes, on the right instead an image of San Francis of Paola for whom the Bourbons had a deep devotion, and finally in the central part, on the main apse is the work dedicated to the Our Lady of Porto Salvo. Since 1932 the church has been a parish seat, one of seven in the municipality of Ischia.

The Church of St. Peter

Here you can also visit the St. Peter's Church, formerly known as of St. Mary of Grace, for a custom of the time that all churches used as burial places should have been named after it. Today it is the Church of St. Peter, for the procession that took place on June 28 each year where the inhabitants carried the statue of the apostle. It is said that a very bloody episode took place here: a certain Pasquale Battistessa, one of the nobles of the Kingdom of Naples who had joined the brief season of the Neapolitan Republic, was executed by hanging by the Bourbons in the 1799 uprisings on the Fishermen's Beach but he was only unconscious and "came back to life" in the very churchyard. He was then killed for the second time with numerous stab wounds at the foot of the high altar, desecrating this sacred place. The streets and square around the church today are dedicated to him.

From an architectural point of view, it is completely different from other religious buildings in the municipality of Ischia: The facade has a Baroque style and a convex shape that follows the elliptical curve of the interior plan. It has an apsidal area and four side chapels decorated by the artisan Francis Starace. From the outside, it is possible to admire the elliptical dome covered with yellow and green majolica tiles, made by the Neapolitan workshop of the brothers Chiaiese. Visitors at the entrance are greeted by a pair of shell-shaped stoups, and near the altar is a wooden sculpture dedicated to St. Peter. In the first chapel on the right, however, is a painting of St. Camillus de Lellis who, according to legend, was able to heal a plague. The canvas on the high altar, on the other hand, represents Our Lady of Grace and was painted by Carlo Borrelli Ponticelli, a famous painter from Ischia.
