About this activity

Situated in front of the Silver Bay and the Bay of the Washerwomen, Punta del Telegrafo is a majestic cliff characterized by striking coves and hidden inlets reachable only by sea.

Why visit Telegraph Point Beach

Ascea's coastline consists of a very long beach of soft golden sand, hemmed in by Mediterranean scrub, and the beach of Punta del Telegrafo is located in the heart of the coastal stretch of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, on the beautiful Cilento coast, in the hamlet of Baia Tirrena, south of the town center of Marina di Ascea. It is characterized by long golden beaches and numerous dune formations in which, from July to September, the fragrant Sea Lily, protected by a ban on harvesting, blooms.

The beach is bordered by the imposing cliff of Punta del Telegrafo, on the top of which the remains of the ancient watchtower, Torre del Telegrafo, are clearly visible.

Overlooking the cliff is the lovely islet called Pietra di Nante, Scuoglio Ri Nanti in local dialect, a large rock, and behind it are the delightful coves of Baia della Rondinella and Baia D'Argento, accessible only by sea.

In this stretch of beach the sea is particularly beautiful, blue, crystal clear and transparent, with sandy and sloping seabed, ideal for swimming and bathing, or for diving. Not surprisingly, Torre del Telegrafo beach is frequented by snorkeling enthusiasts and is one of the beaches in the Cilento region to have won the Blue Flag for years.

The most important things to know about Telegraph Point Beach

In the protected patch of one of the very few still-intact examples of Mediterranean dune, the increasingly rare Sea Lily blooms. The endemic "Cilento Broom," on the other hand, clings to the rocks of Punta del Telegrafo, a Site of Community Interest famous for its vegetation and geological stratification. At the apex of the gorse grove of Punta del Telegrafo rises the Tower, almost a defensive outpost of the monumental cliff, characterized by small enchanting beaches, cliffs that are inaccessible in places, caves, once a shelter for fishermen's boats, and mysterious ravines. Small inlets hide the limpid seabed of Baia d'Argento and Baia delle Rondinelle, located immediately behind Scuoglio Ri Nanti, the last point of contact with the mainland.

Curiosities about Punta del Telegrafo

The beach is also known as Cliff Beach, a name derived from the geological formation at the far end of the beach, a veritable fortress on which stands a defensive tower, the Telegraph Tower, dating from the period of the Kingdom of Naples and now dilapidated.
