About this activity

Don't make plans for the first Sunday of the month! An exciting tour of Baia Castle and the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Museum awaits you. The Aragonese Castle is located in Baia, a small hamlet in the municipality of Bacoli, and stands on a promontory overlooking the sea surrounded by natural defenses such as high tuff cliffs and depressions of the calderas of Baia's Fondi volcanoes.

The structure was erected in 1495 by the Aragonese, and with the addition of moats, walls and drawbridges, the castle was virtually impregnable. From its top there is a magnificent view of the Gulf of Pozzuoli and as far as Ischia, Procida and Cumae. Precisely because of its location relatively close to the Phlegraean sites, the Castle of Baia was later chosen to house the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields, which over the years is to house the most important artifacts found in excavations in the area.

With more than 40 exhibition rooms, the guided tour will introduce you to the millennia-long history of the Phlegraean Fields area, and you will see terraces, medieval towers, drawbridges and sections devoted to the history of Puteoli, Cumae, Baiae, Misenum and Liternum, as well as recent findings of Submerged Bay.

First Sunday of the month free tickets

Taking advantage of the first Sunday of the month to enjoy free tickets, we decided to spend a family morning here. The castle is easily reached after entering the hamlet of Baia and passing the village by a couple of kilometers. Outside, just after the stadium, we find a large private parking lot where we can park our car. After a short uphill ramp, the entrance is reached and it is immediately possible to walk along the ancient walls and a garden with a view toward Cape Miseno. Entering the inside of the walls (passing over what looks like an old drawbridge) a path, still uphill, takes us to the top. Already from this point, from a few cracks and then later more widely, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the marvelous and colorful Baia lighthouse with adjoining beach. Continuing on, there is the entrance to what is the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields, even containing ancient artifacts found in Cuma during excavations in the early 1900s. Absolutely worth mentioning at the entrance is the relief model of a map showing us the area of the Phlegraean Fields in the first centuries AD. An exciting sight. Having visited the museum, which is large and has numerous rooms, we reach the roof of the castle, where there is also a room there with old photos dedicated to Baia and its surroundings. We can glimpse the entire Gulf of Pozzuoli and the beach below, surrounded by crystal clear waters that fill the eyes with beauty. In good visibility conditions, Vesuvius also appears in the background. A place that we were admiring for the first time and that turned out to be a spectacular surprise even for us who live nearby. A place to visit without a shadow of a doubt.
