The small town of Pietrelcina has just over 2,000 inhabitants, but it is one of the best-known towns in the province of Benevento, as in 1897 it was the birthplace of Padre Pio. Today the Sannio town is a renowned center of religious and other tourism because of the charm of its landscapes and its many attractions.
On this guided tour of the historic center you will visit the Padre Pio Memories Museum and the Rione Castello, where the house where the saint was born is located. Afterwards, you will also visit the St. Anne's Church, a building dating back to the 13th century and rebuilt after the 1688 earthquake. Here Padre Pio was baptized and received his First Communion.
The excursion to Pietrelcina ends at the Church of the Holy Family, the construction of which began in 1926 and ended in 1951. For a little extra cost and an extra hour's time, one can travel up to Roman Plain. In this area of the countryside there is an old farm that belonged to Padre Pio's family.
Besides the cottage you can also see a chapel, the Little Church of St. Francis, where the elm tree under which the hooded friar received his first stigmata is preserved. Finally, here you will also have a chance to visit the Liturgical Hall, built to welcome the thousands of pilgrims arriving in Pietrelcina.
