City of esoteric charm, Benevento is one of the most fascinating locations because of its thousand-year history. It is located in the Apennine hinterland of Campania and stands at the confluence of the two rivers Sabato and Calore. Formerly called Malies by the Samnite population, it was later renamed by the ancient Romans Maleventum and then Beneventum.
Today the capital city can boast a very rich historical and artistic heritage stemming from centuries of domination. Throughout history, however, Benevento has also become a place of sinister fascination as local legends tell that witches' sabbaths were held here around a large walnut tree. It is no coincidence that Benevento is considered the "witch city".
If you would also like to get to know this unique and evocative place, all you have to do is take part in this guided tour that meets you all year round in Castle Square. Over the course of 3 hours you will be able to visit the Church of Hagia Sophia, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011. Next you will see the Arch of Trajan and the wonderful Benevento Cathedral.
During the activity there will also be time for a stop at the Alberti store, the historic Benevento company that produces Strega liqueur and nougat. Here you can taste nougat, Strega and other goodies and will be told the legend of the witches who apparently populated the area in the past.
