Guided Tour
The Valley of the Mills in Gragnano is an authentic nature park which combines industrial archaeology and natural beauty, revealing one of the most characteristic landscapes in the province of Naples. This valley, famous for its historic pasta production, takes its name from the mills that have operated in this area since the 13th century, turning wheat into flour.
The geographical link between Gragnano and Amalfi gave rise to a thriving commercial activity. The valley, located downstream of the Mount Cervigliano, was a strategic passage point for those wishing to reach the Amalfi coast from Pompeii and Castellammare. This context encouraged the establishment of mills, which complemented the production of textiles, particularly silks, which were highly prized.
The main link road led to the sea, from where the grain was transported to feed the mills and, in turn, the finished products left for Naples and surrounding towns. With nearly thirty mills in the valley, the demand for flour from bakers in Naples and surrounding towns was readily met.
Today, the Valley of the Mills is not only a place of attraction for history and nature lovers, but also a symbol of Gragnano's culinary tradition, which lives on in the famous "Kingdom of Pasta". A visit to this fascinating area allows one to discover the roots of an industry that has shaped the culture and economy of a region, paying homage to a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
