The Diecimare Nature Park, a protected area of Campania since 1980, is a wonderful WWF oasis, located in the province of Salerno occupying a total area of 444 hectares; in particular, the municipalities that accommodate it are Cava de Tirreni, Mercato San Severino and Baronissi.
The origins take place in Cava de' Tirreni, when the park was donated to the Holy Trinity Monastery of Cava de' Tirreni by Prince Gisulfo II. In 1993 WWF decided to take personal care of the park. Unfortunately, starting in 2009 there were problems with the management of the park, fires and lack of funds from the institutions, which caused its decline until 2012, when it was saved thanks to the contribution of the Terra Mia association and local authorities. The area belonging to San Severino is currently in the hands of WWF, which is also engaged on the social front with activities at the educational farm.
This wonderful oasis will allow you to rediscover the pleasure of nature walks, and with a little luck you may even encounter some protected species that inhabit the woods. The variety of flora and fauna is indescribable, in fact the vegetation alternates between wooded areas and low garrigue and scrub, and this makes the park a natural botanical garden with a high presence of different but coexisting habitats in a few hectares. About 200 plant species belonging to 40 families have been identified in the area.
Special routes have been marked out for you to venture with a guide through the park's trails to discover its history and features. Among these, designed for those who love to walk, is the route andscursion, which departs from the City of Mercato San Severino at the Castle to embark on a fascinating 500-year journey through time, passing through ancient gates and retracing the alleys of the city and the Castle. Another very interesting one is the Hawk Trail, which is home to so many species of raptors, including buzzards, sparrowhawks, hawks, and kestrels. This trail is especially distinctive at night because of the typically nocturnal call of birds of prey.
If you are a daredevil, you can undertake the more difficult and tiring one, the Two Gulfs Trail, which ascends along the ridges from Forcella della Cava to Monte Caruso, but the view that awaits you at the end is breathtaking: from these points you can observe both the Gulf of Naples Than that of Salerno.
At the entrance to the park you will be greeted by the Visitor Center, inside which there is a nature museum where you can buy local products to take home with you. The educational farm founded by the WWF houses between areas: the Bumblebee area, where the behavior of this insect species is studied and observed, the House of Bees, where you can see bees at work, and the Green Classroom with the orchid garden. This initiative is a huge opportunity to engage children and activate their senses through observation, listening, contact with animals and games.
