About this activity

The ceramics of Vietri sul Mare represent one of the main commercial activities of the small Amalfi village. The history of Vietri ceramics seems to have very ancient roots and is thought to have originated in the Etruscan era, around the 5th century BC.

This market experienced its golden age especially from the 13th century onwards, when ceramic objects became one of the most precious goods for the maritime republic of Amalfi. In the following centuries, Vietri sul Mare ceramics continued to acquire value and the manufacturing techniques themselves became increasingly refined.

The real turning point, however, only occurred in the period between the two world wars, when many German Jews find refuge on the Amalfi Coast and offer local artisans their art in exchange for a roof over their heads.

This gave new impetus to the processing of Vietri ceramics, influenced by the dictates of Jewish culture.

Since then, the styles and processing methods have continued to refine, to reach the excellence of today. So if you want your students to learn about this very special form of craftsmanship, all you have to do is book a educational workshop dedicated to ceramics in Vietri sul Mare.

The lesson will last approximately 50 minutes and will begin with a brief theoretical introduction to orient yourself in the fantastic world of ceramics. Below, examples will be shown manual modeling of the material (pinch and dove) and of the potter's wheel. Then there will be a demonstration of bath enamelling and the majolica decoration with the small lathe with floral and geometric motifs will be illustrated.

For the enjoyment of the little ones, this fun educational workshop for school groups dedicated to clay manipulation is available for purchase. The experience takes place in beautiful Vietri sul Mare, and children will be able to learn the fine art of Vietrese ceramics. How to reach the meeting point by car

From Piazza Garibaldi move onto Corso Lucci and Via Ferraris to take the A3. Continue for 47 km and take the exit for Vietri sul Mare. After 650 meters continue on Ponte Remo Svincolo Vietri and enter Corso Umberto I.

How to reach the meeting point by public transportation

From Naples Central Station take the metropolitan train to Salerno and get off at the Vietri sul Mare stop. Continue on foot along Via XXV Luglio and Corso Umberto I.
