Admiring the beauty of the majestic façade of the Church of Gesù Nuovo is undoubtedly something you absolutely must do if you come to Naples. Characterized by the typical diamond-point sculpted ashlars over the entire surface, it is the only example of ashlar in Naples. The Church of Gesù Nuovo overlooks the square of the same name dedicated to Gesù Nuovo, a square which also houses the valuable Obelisk of the Immaculate and the Convent and Cloister of Santa Chiara. Through more than a century of work, the Church of Gesù Nuovo has become, due to the peculiarities of its structure and the legends around it, a place to absolutely visit during a trip to Naples.

Enigma: The melody on the facade of the Church of Gesù Nuovo

The Church of Gesù Nuovo has a melody carved into its particular façade. The signs carved on the ashlar, initially interpreted as signatures of the stonecutters of Naples who had supplied the material, are actually letters of the Aramaic alphabet, corresponding to musical notes, positioned as in a score on the façade of the entire Church of New Jesus. The melody that can be played by these symbols was discovered in 2010 by three scholars, and was named Enigma.

History of the Church of Gesù Nuovo

The Church of Gesù Nuovo sorse per volere dei Gesuiti su di un precedente palazzo, di proprietà dei Sanseverino, adattato a Chiesa da parte dei nuovi proprietari tra il 1584 e il 1601, a cui seguirono dei pesanti lavori di ristrutturazione di tutto il complesso. I lavori si dilungarono per tutta la durata del diciassettesimo secolo. Ad opera di restauro conclusa, la facciata di quello che fu il palazzo Sanseverino, caratterizzata dalle particolari bugne, divenne quella che oggi vediamo come facciata della Chiesa. Le bugne sono una sorta di piccole piramidi utilizzate per abbellire i palazzi dal rinascimento veneto. Queste presentano dei segni incisi dai tagliapietre di Napoli che avevano sagomato la pietra di piperno per ottenere queste piramidi da posizionare sulla facciata del palazzo. Entrando nella Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo possono ammirarsi opere pregevoli di molti artisti importanti quali Cosimo Fanzago, Luca Giordano e Francesco Solimena, alcuni dei nomi di ben cinque generazioni di artisti che si sono susseguite e hanno abbellito con dipinti e sculture l’interno della Chiesa, Subito si notano le cappelle delle navate, l’abside e l’altare maggiore posto nel 1854 e tutt’ora in uso.

Curiosities about the Church of Gesù Nuovo

Nel 1943, in piena seconda guerra mondiale, la Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo subì gravi danni durante i bombardamenti di Napoli. Una delle innumerevoli bombe alleate sganciate sulla città si schiantò sulla navata della Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, fortunatamente senza esplodere e non causando danni. L’involucro della bomba inesplosa è tutt’ora conservato nei locali vicino alla cappella dedicata a San Giuseppe Moscati. Secondo una leggenda il bugnato a forma di piramide aveva come scopo di attirare le energie positive per salvaguardare il palazzo dalla iattura. Ma le sventure capitate al palazzo nei suoi seicento anni di storia hanno dato vita alla leggenda che il bugnato sia stato esposto al contrario, diventando catalizzatore per le energie negative. Una spiegazione “paranormale” per giustificare i crolli e gli incidenti che ha subito la Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo nel corso dei secoli.

In the various chapels inside the right and left naves, one is dedicated to San Giuseppe Moscati, the "doctor of the poor". In fact, during his life he dedicated himself to the care and economic support of the less well-off, as a layman and following religious dictates. He was beatified in 1975 by Paul VI and sanctified by John Paul II in 1987 following a miracle attributed to Saint Giuseppe Moscati which occurred in 1979.
