About this tour

L'Flavian Amphitheater is one of the two amphitheaters that can be admired in Pozzuoli and is one of the main attractions of the Phlegrean city. To visit it, we offer this guided excursion inside that will take you back two thousand years.

This imposing structure dates back to the first century AD and was erected to deal with the demographic development of ancient Puteoli, which had made the building previously used for circus performances inadequate. It is said that here in the 4th century AD the martyrdom of San Gennaro, then sent back to Solfatara.

The Flavian Amphitheater was thus employed to host gladiator fights and it is estimated that it could hold up to 40,000 spectators. In fact, in terms of capacity it was second only to the Colosseum and the Amphitheater Campano in Capua.

According to historians, it would have been built under Vespasian and inaugurated by Titus, and its discovery dates back to 1839 with the first archaeological excavations. However, the monument was only finally unearthed in 1947.

Architecturally, it shows an exterior facade with three orders of arcades, four main entrances and twelve other secondary entrances. In the basements gears used to lift the cages of the beasts that fought with the gladiators can still be seen.

How to reach the Flavian Amphitheater by car

From Piazza Garibaldi move onto Corso Novara, Calata Ponte di Casanova and Via Nuova Poggioreale to take Corso Malta. Then take the Domitiana/Pozzuoli exit. Enter the A56 for 15 km and exit at Pozzuoli/Via Campana. Continue on Via Fiascone, Via Artiaco and Corso Terracciano.

How to reach the Flavian Amphitheater by public transportation

From the central station at Piazza Garibaldi, take Metro Line 2 and get off at the Pozzuoli Solfatara stop. Continue on foot on Via Solfatara, Via Anfiteatro and Corso Terracciano.
