About this tour

One of the most fascinating and striking places in the Phlegrean area is undoubtedly theSybil's Cavern Pozzuoli. To visit it, you can purchase this guided tour of the site that allows you to admire its beauty and learn all its secrets and legends.
The Antro della Sibilla is an artificial tunnel dating back to Greco-Roman times found during archaeological excavations in the nearby city of Cumae. Today this site is considered the place where the legendary Cumaean Sibyl Unveiled their oracles.
The date of construction is somewhat uncertain, but according to archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri it was built between the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Other scholars, however, date the gallery between the 10th and 4th centuries BC. This place is said to have been the home of the Cumana Sibyl whose Virgil mentions in the Aeneid, and the Latin poet himself describes a cavern similar to the one in Pozzuoli.
Structural work was carried out in Roman and Byzantine times, but the tunnel was abandoned from the 13th century onward before being discovered in 1932 by Maiuri himself. The cavern is entirely excavated in the tuff and shows a linear and straight course.
It has a trapezoid shape at the top, perhaps as earthquake protection by the Greeks. The cavern then ends with a flat-vaulted hall in which 3 niches open. The one on the west side is preceded by a vestibule which according to tradition is the room in which the Sibyl resided. What are you waiting for? Book your ticket for the tour too!
