Discover this nature and landscape itinerary between history and religion, located in the Monti Lattari Regional Park. The loop route starts from Pian del Pero: You will walk among centuries-old beech trees and ever-emerging limestone rock.
Our itinerary is closely linked to the figures of St. Catellus, St. Antoninus and Archangel Michael. You will find the Cross of the Reed, also visible from Sorrento, the Holy Water Spring, where you can also see the carnivorous plant pinguicola hirtiflora and the neviere, ditches filled with snow for ice production. The whole trail is immersed in the beautiful mountain landscape of Faito.
Mount San Michele with its 1444 meters is the highest peak of the Lattari Mountains and is called Molare because of its shape similar to the tooth of the same name. From here we can admire one of the widest landscapes in Campania: we are on the highest part of the Monte Sant'Angelo massif at tre Pizzi, the gaze can sweep from Cape Miseno to Punta Licosa, come on Picentines at Vesuvius, over the entire Sorrento Peninsula, Capri, Ischia, Procida and Li Galli while on clearer days it is also possible to admire the Ponzian Islands and the massif of the Matese.
The story of the mount revolves around three figures: San Catello, St. Antoninus and theArchangel Michael. Not surprisingly, the mountain is also known as the summit of Pizzo San Michele for the presence of the Shrine of St. Michael from which the imposing Vesuvius can be seen.
According to the story, one night St. Michael the Archangel appeared in a dream to the two saints Catellus and Antoninus: he asked them to build a chapel in his honor. It was erected on the very highest point of the Lattari Mountains, and soon the temple became one of the most important in Europe, the destination of many pilgrimages.
