The Feast of St. Anne is one of the most anticipated and solemn moments on the island of Ischia that takes place every year on the July 26. This celebration has been held for about a century according to ancient rituals that are repeated inexorably and unchangingly.

The origins of the Feast of St. Anne

The festival is said to have originated from the custom of pregnant women walking in procession with the icon of the saint that was displayed in a chapel in Cartaromana Bay. Keeping the mothers-to-be company was a boat parade decorated with flowers.

In the 1930s, a group of young people on the island noticed this ritual, which was accompanied by a lavish dinner at which they consumed rabbit and other Ischitan delicacies. The boys therefore decided to celebrate every July 26, even allowing the boats to move in procession.
