About this activity
Agropoli is one of the main tourist centers of the Cilento. It is a small town in the province of Salerno that lies at the southern end of the Gulf of Salerno. One of the most important points of the city is undoubtedly the Port of Agropoli, which is the economic and social hub of local tourist activities.
It is an artificial structure located a few kilometers from the beautiful temples of Paestum and the village of Castellabate, which became famous for hosting the filming of the movie Welcome to the South. With its 1,000 units, the port of Agropoli is the most important landing point on the Cilento coast.
Access to the port is marked by the appropriate red and verse lights, and nearby one can admire the Agropoli lighthouse, one of the many attractions that fall within an area of great scenic and historical-cultural value.
The functions of the port of Agropoli are essentially related to pleasure boating and fishing, but there is no shortage of maritime connections with Capri, the Amalfi coast and the Cilento coast itself thanks to the hydrofoil service. A spectacular sunset can be observed from the harbor, and always to the west one can catch a glimpse of the rock of San Francesco jutting out of the sea just a few steps from the Trentova bay.
Instead, looking east, it is possible to see the historic center of Agropoli, whose entrance is indicated by the Greek-Byzantine gate and where one can visit the church of Our Lady of Constantinople and the Angevin-Aragonese castle. At night the port comes alive and becomes the heart of the nightlife, all just a few meters from the city center.
The history of the port of Agropoli
The port of Agropoli was originally a very small natural harbor, where a few boats stopped and a few houses in the vicinity overlooked it. Only the smell of saltiness and the sound of the sea waves could be perceived, while on the beach the fishermen's nets could be seen.
Here was the salecaro, where fishermen laboriously stored their boats safely, and the Fortino, a meeting and recreation point for sailors. From the 1960s onward, there began a slow and gradual decline of the port, which has returned to its former glory thanks to a massive and ambitious project of restructuring who converted it into a modern tourist facility.
Concrete flows have unfortunately covered part of the reefs and inlets, but the end result is certainly of unquestionable value in that today the port of Agropoli can compete with other nationwide ports and is able to offer the main services. The development in recent years has also been favored by the Circomare which allowed new floating docks to be installed.
Blue Flag
Agropoli port receives annual coveted award Blue Flag of Tourist Landings by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Blue Flag Program was launched in 1985 in France and has been operational throughout Europe since 1987.
To date, a large number of countries around the world have joined the program, whose goal is to promote the sustainable development of coastal regions through high quality standards. So, Blue Flag recognition is a feather in the cap for any seaside resort. In 2022 Agropoli was awarded the Blue Flag for the 23rd consecutive year.
