In the beautiful Capri, also known as the Island of the Sirens, among luxury boutiques and sophisticated narrow streets, it is possible to admire truly striking natural wonders. In addition to the infamous Faraglioni, on the extreme eastern tip of the island there is in fact an imposing rocky structure: theNatural Arch.
Surrounded by Mediterranean maquis vegetation and directly overlooking the turquoise waters of the sea, the natural arch can be visited after a wonderful walk from the viewpoint by Via Tragara and crosses the Trail of Pizzolungo. From here there is a special panorama that captivates visitors with breathtaking views. Along the trail you can admire Villa Malaparte and you can also visit the striking Cave of Matermania.
The Natural Arch of Capri is a well-known destination for tourists who come from all over the world to admire the innermost beauty of the Phlegrean island. The rocky structure is also visible from the sea. The arch rises on the overhang called "o' funno," the bottom, by the locals who used to go there for relaxing baths surrounded by one of the most fascinating environments on the island.
A full 18 meters high and 12 meters wide, the natural arch is a rock structure with prehistoric origins. Karst in nature, it appears to have been formed during the period Paleolithic, then shaped by the action of exogenous agents, such as water and rain, which have scratched its surface carving this work of art directly from living rock. Because of its location, the natural arch offers wonderful views from the nearest islets of theLi Galli Archipelago until Punta Campanella at Sorrento Peninsula, visible during the clearest days.
The Natural Arch can be reached exclusively on foot through two possible solutions: from the famous Piazzetta of Capri, proceeding to the locality Croce continuing to Via Matromania and then Via dell'Arco Naturale but the most recommended one is the Pizzolungo Trail.
The natural arch is located at the end of one of the most beautiful and least known paths on the island of Capri, the Trail of Pizzolungo. The walk starts near the belvedere of Via Tragara where you take steps leading to the hidden path. Once down the last step you find yourself immersed in the nature of a fragrant pine forest enriched by agaves, blueberry plants and broom.
Along the way a curious natural cavity attracts the attention of visitors. This is the Grotta della Matermania a cavity 30 meters deep and 20 meters wide that in Roman times was transformed into a nymphaeum dedicated to the goddess Cybele where rituals and sacred sacrifices were held. A little further on stands the beautiful Villa Malaparte surrounded by verdant vegetation that stands out against an incredible panorama overlooking the deep blue sea. The path offers the opportunity to admire the most beautiful landscapes of the island. From here you can admire the Faraglioni, lo Scoglio del Monacone and all the Gulf of Naples.
The Natural Arch can only be reached on foot. Whichever walk you choose, the route is pleasant and undemanding but quite long. The east face of the Natural Arch has been climbed over the years by experienced climbers and enthusiasts.
