During a discovery tour of the island of Capri, between unbridled shopping and strolling the crowded streets of the island, you cannot miss a stop at the famous Gardens of Augustus.
The peaceful terrace surrounded by colorful, fresh plants, stands just a stone's throw from the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, in the most touristy part of Capri's upper part. From here you can admire an exceptional view of the island's wonders and landmarks such as the Faraglioni, Marina Piccola and Monte Solaro. Besides being a good alternative for a break from the crowds of tourists and visitors, this small botanical garden is also the only place from which you can admire the famous and historic Krupp Street, which stands just below the terrace and is currently closed to the public.
One of the landmarks of the island of Capri, is without a shadow of a doubt, the wonderful and unmissable Botanical Garden Of the Gardens of Augustus. Among the lawns and avenues of these beautiful gardens, one encounters from time to time, statues in the neoclassical style. The different marble blocks that make up the structure, overlap until they reach about 5 meters in height. At the apex, one can admire the face of the father of the Bolshevik revolution, masterfully carved by artist Giacomo Manzù.

The Gardens of Augustus are, at the moment, the only place from which to view Via Krupp, the beautiful and historic Capri street so beloved by visitors to the island that is currently closed to the public due to danger from falling rocks.
The Gardens of Augustus and the adjoining Krupp Street were created in the early 1900s at the behest of German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp. The latter, a nature and marine biology enthusiast, loved to spend his vacations on the island of Capri at the historic Quisisana. To reach the facility, however, there was no direct and fast way, so the industrialist wanted to commission the construction of a road from Marina Piccola that would lead him directly to the area where the Charterhouse of St. James, a stone's throw from the Quisisana.
The work was entrusted to engineer Emilio Mayer who carved the road directly out of the rocky ridge. A series of hairpin bends alternated to overcome a height difference of about 100 meters, going to form one of the most beautiful and scenic roads on Capri: the beautiful Via Krupp.
At the end of the street, a garden area was set up, filled with plants and flowers. At the end of 1918 the Krupp Gardens, were managed by the city administration and assumed its present name in honor of the great Roman emperor Augustus.
