L'Campanian Amphitheater of Santa Maria Capua Vetere is undoubtedly among the most fascinating ancient structures that Campania has to offer. You will be able to visit this monument with its thousand-year history thanks to an exclusive guided tour that will allow you to see for yourself one of the main attractions of the city in the province of Caserta.
In size, this amphitheater is second only to the Colosseum in Rome and is surrounded by a large green space in which there are additional relics of Roman civilization, including a curvilinear portico, the Republican amphitheater, and an octagonal building from the imperial era. The Campanian Amphitheater was built during the Flavian age, between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, following the model of the Colosseum.
It has been restored and beautified thanks to theEmperor Hadrian, but it was inaugurated only by his successor Antoninus Pius. The building could accommodate up to 60,000 spectators and in fact replaced the local ancient arena that went down in history for Spartacus' revolt in 73 BC. Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the amphitheater was destroyed by the Vandals and Saracens and has been plundered several times since the 9th century.
The Amphitheater Campano has thus become. National Monument of 1822 and was not opened to the public until 1913. Instead, in 2013, as part of the centennial celebration since its opening, a renovation phase was launched with the addition of a new ticket office, a bookshp and an organic restaurant.
