Scoglione beach can only be reached by sea
A small fishing village in the Posillipo district of Naples, it is located overlooking the sea: in ancient times it was named Santa Maria but with the Swabian period it became mare plalum, then mare chianu and today Marechiaro. Contrary to what many people think, it is not called this because of the transparency of its waters but because of the tranquility of the place.
Famous all over the world, it has a unique atmosphere of fishermen's nets, old wooden gozzi boats and small restaurants by the sea: during the 1960s it was one of the symbols of the Italian dolce vita and was also frequented by Hollywood stars.
It is a unique place where you can spend a nice evening dining by the sea surrounded by a wonderful view but not only that: there is also a small beach here, the Scoglione, the mysterious Palace of Spirits and A' fenestrella and Marechiare.
Lo Scoglione is a magical place, a rocky paradise with crystal-clear water that can be reached by sea in no time, via one of the many small boats that depart daily. You can lie down and relax on meters of flat rocks washed by small waves from which you can admire a splendid view from the Vesuvius to the island of Capri.
Known to some as Villarosa or Virgil's Villa, the Palace of Spirits is one of the most mysterious and evocative places in Naples. It is an ancient Roman structure in the archaeological and environmental protected area of Pausilypon and is said to be inhabited by ancient spirits and ghosts. There would be mysterious apparitions here that some attribute to the poet Virgil who loved Naples so much: at night one would hear a gentle wailing of a luminous figure playing the zither and reciting poetry in Latin verse.
"Quanno spónta la luna a Marechiare, anche li pisce nce fanno a ll'ammore," is the poet's famous line Salvatore di Giacomo who, seeing a small window with a carnation on the sill, composed together with the master Francis Paul Tosti what has become one of the most famous Neapolitan songs, Marechiare, love poem for a woman named Carolina.
Today right under that fenestrella a memorial plaque is found, and someone always goes to place a fresh carnation on it.
The village of Marechiaro is featured in nearly two hundred classic songs according to the Archives of Neapolitan Song but also named in a large number of poetic verses.
