The Palace of Portici è una meraviglia neoclassica sita nell’omonima piccola cittadina ai piedi del Vesuvius, built in 1738 as the summer residence of the royal family of the Bourbon. This place still possesses a large forest, the upper part was used for hunting while in the valley it was ornamental. Such illustrious names worked on its construction as Luigi Vanvitelli and Ferdinand Fuga.
Porches was chosen by the King Charles of Bourbon per diversi motivi: in primis il territorio in sé, ma anche per le risorse legate alla caccia.
La Reggia di Portici è stata fatta costruire dal sovrano come palazzo reale prima della costruzione della più imponente Royal Palace of Caserta.
Il sovrano Carlo III di Borbone e la sua consorte Maria Amalia di Sassonia, in visita presso la villa del Duca d’Elboeuf, rimasti così favorevolmente impressionati, decisero di far costruire a partire dal 1738, un palazzo che potesse ospitarli.

Tra i grandi nomi che si apprestarono a lavorare alla costruzione della maestosa Reggia di Portici vanno certamente menzionati il pittore Giuseppe Bonito, che decorò le sale del palazzo, e lo scultore Joseph Canart che, operando con marmi di Carrara, allestì le opere scultoree del parco reale.
Today, the Palace of Portici houses the headquarters of the Faculty of Agriculture dell’Università Federico II di Napoli ed alcuni musei.
I reperti archeologici rinvenuti nel corso degli scavi nelle città di Herculaneum and Pompeii furono numerosi, dunque si optò per disporli all’interno delle stanze della Reggia.
