The Palace of Portici is a neoclassical marvel located in the small town of the same name at the foot of the Vesuvius, built in 1738 as the summer residence of the royal family of the Bourbon. This place still possesses a large forest, the upper part was used for hunting while in the valley it was ornamental. Such illustrious names worked on its construction as Luigi Vanvitelli and Ferdinand Fuga.
Porches was chosen by the King Charles of Bourbon for several reasons: first and foremost the land itself, but also the resources related to hunting.
The Palace of Portici was built by the ruler as a royal palace before the construction of the more impressive Royal Palace of Caserta.
Sovereign Charles III of Bourbon and his consort Maria Amalia of Saxony, visiting the Duke d'Elboeuf's villa, were so favorably impressed that they decided to have a palace built starting in 1738 to accommodate them.
The Palace of Portici has a wide and solemn facade, has a quadrangular floor plan and an atrium through which it was accessed by means of a gate built of iron held up by nine pillar vaults.
It is suggested to visit the Louis XIV drawing room and the boudoir of Queen Marie Amalie of Saxony with its walls decorated in Capodimonte porcelain, much appreciated by the sovereign.
On the left side of the palace courtyard can be seen the barracks of the Royal Guards and the Palatine Chapel, while an imposing staircase leads to the second floor, where Carolina Bonaparte's apartment is located.
During the French period (1806-1815) the palace underwent some renovations to the decorative apparatus. There was the transformation of some rooms on the main floor, Joachim Murat had them furnished with new furniture and in a taste marked by considerable luxury.
It should not be forgotten that to access the Palace from the sea in 1773 the Granatello harbor was built.
The forest of the Palace of Portici, enlarged to a considerable size, stretched from the Pugliano area all the way to the sea. The forest is divided into two distinct parts: an upper zone and a lower zone.
There were extensive avenues bordered by English gardens, which provided a backdrop for works of art such as the Mermaid Fountain, King Charles' Kiosk, and the Swan Fountain.
There was even an amphitheater in the forest, and Ferdinand IV also had a zoo with exotic animals set up in the park.

In 1872 at the top Nicholas Anthony Pedicine created theBotanical Garden, giving this place scientific and educational purposes as well.
Among the big names who set to work on the construction of the majestic Palace of Portici should certainly be mentioned the painter Giuseppe Bonito, who decorated the halls of the palace, and the sculptor Joseph Canart who, working with Carrara marble, set up the sculptural works in the royal park.
Today, the Palace of Portici houses the headquarters of the Faculty of Agriculture of the Federico II University of Naples and some museums.
Archaeological finds unearthed during excavations in the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were numerous, so it was decided to arrange them within the rooms of the Palace.
Thus was born one of the most famous collections in the world, leading to the creation of the Herculanense Museum, opened in 1758, a favorite destination of the Grand Tour.
