About this tour

Walk with us on the banks of the Lake Avernus And enjoy this mythical place away from the city.

In ancient times it was believed to be a magical and untouchable place during Greek rule, later desecrated by the Romans with the construction of the Portus Julius. The poet Virgil described it as the gateway to the Underworld that Aeneas passed through to reach the Kingdom of the Dead.

It rose from the ashes of a volcano and is the only freshwater lake among the four Phlegraean lakes. The name comes from the Greek aornon, birdless, because in ancient times the sulfurous exhalations drove birds away.

Today, as volcanic activity has waned, it has become one of the richest environments for avifauna to Naples. The lake, in fact, is populated by several species of anatidae, that is, waterfowl that are used to nest among the reeds of the bodies of water. These include coots, grebes and mallards. Freshwater turtles are also often illegally released on the shores of the lake.

Along the way you can also admire the Temple of Apollo, an ancient spa complex, and the fascinating Cave of the Sibyl, priestess of Apollo.
