L'Irpinia Express is more than just a train as it is a true journey through time and landscape. You board historic railcars, the old ALN 668 restored, and slowly traverse Irpinia, an area of Campania rich in villages, nature and traditions that often remain off the beaten path of mass tourism.
The starting point is almost always Avellino, where you park, board the train and let yourself be carried on a slow-paced journey through valleys, hills, forests and small villages scattered across the countryside. Each itinerary takes you to a different village, and the great thing is that you don't just arrive since there are guided tours, alley walks, tastings, lunches in farmhouses, markets or local festivals. In some cases you even get to iconic places in Irpinia, such as the Goleto Abbey.
The Irpinia Express was born from the collaboration between FS Foundation and Campania Region, with the aim of making the historic Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line a tourist route capable of showing visitors the landscapes and traditions of Irpinia. Each trip is organized by the InLocoMotivi Association, which has been working for years to enhance this scenic southern Italian rail route.
Throughout 2025 the calendar is packed: every month there is at least one weekend of departures, often more than one. They range from the colors of spring to fall festivals and special Christmas editions in December, with markets in villages whitewashed or illuminated for the holidays. The most frequent destinations are Calitri, Aquilonia, Castelfranci, Taurasi, Montella, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Conza, Cairano, and Lacedonia, each with its own special atmosphere.
As of December 2025, Irpinia Express trips take place over 3 weekends:
December 21, 2025 - Avellino - Calitri destination Aquilonia (Christmas markets)
As for the tickets, generally cost between 10 and 16 euros round trip, with the possibility of bringing children almost free of charge. It is a simple, affordable, yet special trip and is the kind of experience that makes you rediscover the region from a new perspective.
In summary, the Irpinia Express is the perfect way to experience a slow tourism, enjoy nature, discover hidden villages and spend a different day than usual. Ideal for those who want to unplug, without straying too far, but still immersing themselves in something authentic and evocative.
