In 2026 Italy's holiday calendar offers several interesting opportunities to arrange longer breaks from work by taking advantage of so-called bridges. With a little organization, it only takes a few days off to get long weekends or real mini-vacations.
The year started well as early as January: the January 1 fell on a Thursday and Epiphany on a Tuesday. Taking January 2 and 5 as vacations made it possible to create a continuous break of almost a week, ideal for extending the New Year's vacation without consuming too much vacation time.
In April comes the Easter, which in 2026 falls on April 5, with Easter Monday the 6th. Although it does not generate a particularly long bridge, it guarantees at least three consecutive days off, which can become four by adding Friday as a day off. The April 25 on the other hand, it is Saturday, so one can at best stretch the weekend with the following Friday or Monday off.
The month of May is particularly favorable because the May 1 falls on a Friday. In this case the bridge is automatic with three consecutive days with no need to take vacation, perfect for a short spring getaway.
Another very interesting bridge is in June. The Republic Day, June 2, falls on a Tuesday, and taking the preceding Monday off makes for a nice four-day bridge, often considered one of the most enjoyable of the year due to the weather and the proximity of summer.
In August, however, the Mid-August falls on a Saturday, so it does not create a true bridge. It still remains a traditionally summer vacation period, although without any special advantages from the point of view of the vacation plan.
The calendar offers another opportunity in December. L'December 8, feast of the Immaculate Conception, falls on a Tuesday. So taking only one day off (Monday the 7th) provides a four-day bridge. Immediately after that, Christmas falls on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday, offering a long weekend that can easily be extended to New Year's Day with a few strategic days off.
