About this activity

The museum is housed in one of the largest and most amazing churches in Campania, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.

The remains of the early christian mosaics from the 5th century, G. Diano's Assumption on the high altar, the Pietà by the artist De Mura, and the large Renaissance tabernacle dating from about 1520, will help make this a magical experience. Unforgettable is the excitement triggered by the thicket of ancient columns and capitals of perusal (that is, made by reusing material from older buildings), reminders of the ancient early Christian and later Lombard church.

With its five naves, countless chapels and two large liturgical halls of the confraternities, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Capua Vetere also preserves paintings, tombstones, sculptures, books and reliquaries, witnesses to centuries of history. Surely this church will captivate you because of the atmosphere inside, as charged with faith as it is with history.

This sacred place is a meeting of religion and art, a fusion of religious tradition and craftsmanship, capable of telling the faith of men and women who lived in the past and preserving their legacy and cultural memory.

The Caserta Museum System

The Parish Museum collaborates with the Caserta Museum System. The museum system Land of Labor has as its primary objective the promotion of initiatives to document and study all the archaeological, historical, artistic, ethnoanthropological, scientific, landscape and architectural assets that relate to the history and cultural experience of the territory under its jurisdiction and, in general, to the Province of Caserta.

The cultural, social, tourism and economic priorities aim to promote the enjoyment of Museums and local development.

The member and twinned museums involved in the project are: the San Pietro Infine Historical Memory Park, the San Nicola La Strada Peasant Civilization Museum, the Raffaele Marrocco Civic Museum in Piedimonte Matese, the Maddaloni Civic Museum, the Nevio Science Museum Santa Maria Capua Vetere, the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Cathedral Parish Museum, the Caserta Museum of Contemporary Art, the Michelangelo Museum Caserta and finally the Caserta Planetarium.
