About this activity

The Belvedere of San Gennaro, named for its proximity to the shrine of the same name, gives us one of the most striking views of the sea. From this point it is possible to observe simultaneously Bagnoli and the lower part of the city of Pozzuoli. On the Belvedere we find a bench where lovers often pause at sunset lights. The panoramic view from the Belvedere di San Gennaro attracts all the attention of visitors showing the beauty of the Gulf and the Phlegraean Fields.

Astute observers, however, will notice to the left of the lookout a memorial stone commemorating Second Lieutenant Alfonso Trincone.

The memory of Alfonso Trincone on the Belvedere di San Gennaro

The late marshal, father of three and husband of a prison police officer, is a figure whose memory is indelible in the hearts of Pozzuoli residents. Present at the 10-year anniversary ceremony, when the memorial stone was placed on the belvedere, were not only the mayors of the municipalities of Pozzuoli, Fourth and Mount of Procida, including school children who released tricolor balloons in memory of the marshal.

Alfonso Trincone had joined the Carabinieri Corps in his early twenties. On Aug. 23, 1989, after being employed in the Territorial Armed Forces Departments, he was transferred to the Ecological Operations Unit in Rome and seven years later assumed the position of Commander of the Radioactive Substance Pollution Section.

The peacekeeping mission in Iraq

Alfonso Trincone, was 44 years old and was engaged in a peacekeeping mission in Nassiriya during the war in Saddam Hussein's Iraq when, on Nov. 12, 2003, he met his death in a ruthless suicide bombing.

Trincone had already participated from 2000 to 2003 in missions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, for which in December 2004, he was awarded the Diploma of First Class Merit in the Merit of the Environment "in memoriam," with related gold medal, granted by the Minister of the Environment and Territorial Protection for outstanding operational value in the action of safeguarding and preserving the environment at home and during difficult missions abroad. On November 8, 2005, by decree of the President of the Republic, he was awarded the Cross of Honor "in memoriam." The marshal was also named after the barracks of the Company of Pozzuoli and on Nov. 17, 2003, he was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant for Institute Merit.
