The occasion of the Commemoration of the Dead, also known as "Feast of the Dead" is celebrated on Nov. 2 in Italy and in many countries of Catholic tradition. The holiday is inserted immediately after All Saints' Day on Nov. 1 and is dedicated to remembering those who have left us.

As early as the first centuries of Christianity, praying for the dead and the rite of Mass for loved ones no longer living were common practices. A significant turning point occurred around the year 998, when Abbot Odilon of Cluny imposed the commemoration of November 2 in the monasteries dependent on him.

Today the Feast of the Dead is one of the most heartfelt in our country as it is a solemn celebration of the deceased for their peace in the afterlife and transit through purgatory. The holiday thus helps to keep alive the bond with those who are gone, turning remembrance into a time of family fellowship.

On this day, in fact, cemeteries throughout Italy are crowded with people depositing flowers and lights for their loved ones. In some areas then there are those who on the night before Nov. 2 leave a lumen lit in the house or puts an empty place at the table to symbolically "welcome" visiting souls.

For the commemoration of the dead, each region has its own culinary traditions for the occasion. For example, in Lombardy we prepare the Pan dei morti, while in Sicily we find the frutta martorana. In Naples, on the other hand, we have the classic nougat of the dead, a soft variant of nougat also known as 'O murticiell.
