Perched on a Cilento promontory, Agropoli is one of the most beloved and popular resorts in the province of Salerno. The very name Agropoli in ancient Greek meant "high city," precisely in reference to its strategic location. Moreover, different dominations can be noted here, which have marked its history and modified the local urban planning.

However, Agropoli has managed to preserve its historic center and much of the original city walls. Today it is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and its crystal clear sea is awarded the Blue Flag. But what to do or visit in this beautiful town? Let's go and find out together!

The ancient village

One of the first things to see in Agropoli is undoubtedly its wonderful historic center or old town. In this part of the city, it feels like taking a dip back in time and there are breathtaking views of the coast. To take souvenir photos one can stop on the climb of the Scaloni which for several centuries was the only way into the village.

It is a long flight of low and wide stairs overlooking the sea. In the historic center we have a dense network of buildings and alleys of medieval layout, and you can still admire the gateway on whose arch is the coat of arms of the last local feudal family, the Delli Monti Sanfelice dukes.

The city waterfront

After exploring the heart of ancient Agropoli one can move to the more modern area of the resort. The best place to experience the nightlife and have fun is the waterfront San Marco which follows Agropoli's main beach, already a Blue Flag recipient.

Here you can relax with a drink or aperitif at one of the local bars or restaurants. Alternatively, it is possible to take long walks with the children or have an ice cream. In the vicinity of the waterfront there is no shortage of accommodations of various kinds such as hotels, B&Bs, hostels, and private apartments for rent.

The Castle of Agropoli

Agropoli Castle is another must-see. The monument is a angevin aragonese fortress which was intended to defend the people who lived inside the city walls. It is one of the symbols of the Cilento town, and it was the Normans who began its construction between the 11th and 12th centuries.

Major renovation works were conducted by the Aragonese in the 15th century, but what gave it its current appearance was the Sanseverino family. The building has a triangular plan with 3 circular towers on each corner, and there is also a deep moat and a drawbridge. Today, the Agropoli Castle can be visited and some of the rooms inside host events and demonstrations.

The beach of San Marco

As a seaside town, Agropoli offers several beaches where you can sunbathe and have fun in the water. The most popular place for tourists and locals is the San Marco beach, namely that of the waterfront of the same name. For the most part, this shoreline is free and therefore visitors can enjoy it without cost.

The sand is soft and fine, just as the water is crystal clear. On the other hand, those who prefer the beach lido need not fear as there are several establishments that provide the main amenities.

Licina Beach

If you are looking for a more sheltered and less crowded place, the Licina beach is the one for you. It is not very large as a beachfront and several flights of stairs are required to reach it, but it is ideal for those who prefer to get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

On this beach, in fact, one meets mostly people from Agropoli and few tourists. Here, too, the water is transparent and the golden sand allows for trouble-free sunbathing. Licina beach is perfect then for water sports such as lo snorkeling.

The Elephant Cave

Agropoli has no shortage of natural caves that populate the entire local coastline. One of the best known rock formations is the Elephant Cave. Its name comes from the fact that the rock structure vaguely resembles the shape of the animal.

This cavity was formed over the centuries by wind and water erosion and can be admired at the far end of the Agropolese coast by sea. To observe the details of the cave up close, it is possible to rent a canoe or kayak.

The Bay of Trentova

The Trentova Bay is one of the most touristy spots in Agropoli as it is a small paradise on earth. This natural cove 3 km from the center is surrounded by greenery and will impress you with its clear waters with turquoise and green reflections.

Bathing here is a truly unique and exciting experience. Its name comes from an ancient legend according to which 30 seagull or sea turtle eggs were found under the rock of the beach. It is good to say that Trentova Bay is always very crowded, so it is important to choose the most suitable time to visit it.

The Church of Our Lady of Constantinople

While visiting Agropoli, you cannot miss a visit to the Church of Our Lady of Constantinople, one of the city's most important places of worship. It is built on a promontory a short distance from the entrance gate to the old town.

Its construction is supposed to date back to 1583 and inside it houses the statue of the Our Lady of Constantinople. According to legend, the statue was rescued by believers during the Ottoman siege of Agropoli in 1535. Years later, it was found at sea by fishermen and secured in the church named after her.

So if you are looking forward to visiting Agropoli, don't miss out on one of our experiences. For example, you can book the boat tour to Saùco Bay which will take you to this inlet to see the Elephant Cave, Punta Fortino, Cala Pastena, and Trentova Bay. There will be room for a swim stop and an aperitif on board.

Equally striking in the surroundings of Agropoli is theboat excursion to the island of Licosa. Departure is from the port of Agropoli, then head to Punta Fortino and Punta Tresino. Next, you will see St. Francis Rock, Cala San Giovanni, Pozzillo Beach and Punta Licosa. You will make two bathroom stops and be served a rich aperitif.

Finally, we recommend that you purchase this aperitif boat ride at sunset along the coast of Agropoli. At 19:00 you will set sail from the port of Agropoli in the direction of the Bay of Saùco and between music and dancing you can experience an aperitif of typical products and dive into a spectacular sea.
