The headwaters of the Rio Grassano River are located in the municipality of San Salvatore Telesino, one of the most characteristic towns in Sannio. The Rio Grassano rises precisely at the foot of Mount Pugliano, where the erosive activity of the waters created deep fractures between the rocks, which in turn resulted in the sinking of the soil. This caused the formation of large cavities, called karst wells or sinkholes, which can be reached in the dense vegetation through some paths.
The country is heir to Telesia, ancient Samnite city involved in the Punic wars. Along the road connecting San Salvatore Telesino to Telese Terme, in fact, is thearcheological area With the remains of the ancient Roman city from the 1st century BC.
Of the original layout, the beautiful walls and towers with opus reticolatum facing are still visible, while in the countryside areas the baths, the large amphitheater and the aqueduct that brought water from the mountains of Cerreto Sannita to Telesia have been identified. Remains of polygonal Samnite walls from the 5th-4th centuries B.C. and a small church belonging to an early medieval settlement were also discovered along the paths of Mount Pugliano.
In medieval times, several monuments in ancient Telesia were demolished in order to reuse the materials for the purpose of constructing new buildings, including the splendid Bell Tower of Telese Terme, an impressive example of norman monument in Campania. Among the religious architecture worth visiting is definitely theBenedictine Abbey of Most Holy Savior, built around the 10th century. In 1908 the building received as a distinguished guest thearchbishop of Canterbury Saint Anselm of Aosta. According to some historians, the archbishop finished writing the theological work Cur Deus Homo precisely during his stay at the Abbey.
Today in the church it is possible to admire the original architectural volumetry thanks to recent restorations, moreover there is also preserved a wonderful fresco from 1300 depicting St. Scholastica. The facility has housed an Antiquarium since 2010 in which other archaeological remains of ancient Telesia are collected, but the special feature is the well of Sant'Anselmo, which according to tradition was dug in a place indicated by the saint during his stay at St. Savior's.
Art lovers might find it interesting to visit the picture gallery dedicated to Samnite artist Massimo Rao. Following the artist's untimely death, the municipality of San Salvatore Telesino took the lead in promoting this wonderful initiative together with the Massimo Rao Association. The collection of some sixty-five works is on display in four rooms of the Sant'Angelo Gallery, inside a municipal building in the historic center of San Salvatore Telesino.
It is an enigmatic collection, characterized mainly by drawings, engravings and some oil paintings, generously granted on loan for use by Valentino Petrucci and Valentina Romen, granddaughter of Klaus Romen; the latter, in addition to having been Rao's life and travel companion, has always been committed to supporting his work as an artist with great dedication.
To visit this art exhibition is to retrace the author's artistic life from the 1970s to the early 1990s, following the evolution of his works over some 20 years of his career. Rao, also known as the Moon Painter, is considered one of the most original Italian artists of the 20th century thanks to his figurative language, learned through the study of the Old Masters and studded with mysterious and sometimes even visionary subjects.
