In the heart of Anacapri, precisely in St. Nicholas Square, you can admire the monumental Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Built in the Baroque style between 1698 and 1719, designed by architect Domenico Vaccaro, also the author of other places of worship such as the Church of the Conception in Naples, and desired by Mother Seraphim of God. She promised St. Michael the Archangel that if he freed Vienna from the siege of the Turks, she would establish a church in his honor in Anacapri, and so she did. Mother Seraphina also had the Teresian Convent and the Church of St. Theresa built near the Piazzetta of Capri. Bishop Michael Gallo of Vandenejnde of Capri contributed to the construction of the church with his own wealth and later expressed a desire to be buried there; in fact, behind the high altar there is an epigraph in his name. Between 1806 and 1808, with the British and French occupation, the sacred building was used as military quarters and weapons storage. Once the military left the structure, restoration was planned, which began 1815 and was completed 1817.
The building has an octagonal plan in the shape of a Greek cross. Absolutely noteworthy is the high altar made by Augustine Chirola in green and yellow Carrara marble, transported by boat to Capri. Two beautiful white marble angels can be seen on the sides. A feature of the church that astonishes visitors is the tiled floor depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise at the hands of St. Michael the Archangel, the work of Leonardo Chiaiese, the design was instead made by Francesco Solimena. Of great value are the paintings done by Nicola Malinconico, Annunciation and the three paintings depicting the Guardian Angel by Paolo de Matteis, a pupil of Luca Giordano, and the Nativity by Giacomo del Po. The floor cannot be walked on so as not to spoil such beauty, but it can be admired via the side wooden walkways. By climbing a spiral staircase at the entrance, the majolica floor can be seen from above.
