Children have more difficulty in approaching the realities of Herculaneum and Pompeii, it is perhaps a little too complex for them to understand the dynamics of the 79 A.D. eruption and its aftermath, how to visit rooms, workshops and gardens while looking at those remains. So how do you give them, too, the opportunity to approach this historical reality consciously? Simple, you take them to the Virtual Archaeological Museum of Herculaneum!
Within walking distance of the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum rises the MAV, a center of culture and technology applied to cultural heritage and communication, among the most advanced in Italy.
The museum is located in an area of 5000 square meters on 3 levels, located in the heart of Herculaneum, close to the main tourist attractions, such as the excavations, the Golden Mile, the Vesuvius National Park and many others. Inside is a unique and extraordinary museum space: a virtual and interactive path where you can experience the thrill of an amazing journey through time to a moment before the eruption of 79 AD destroyed the city of Herculaneum, that of Pompeii and many others.
More than 70 multimedia installations restore life and splendor to the main archaeological areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Bay, Stabia and Capri. Through scenic reconstructions, holograms and visual interfaces, you will be led into a virtual dimension, where you will playfully and interactively experience the new opportunities that multimedia technology offers to the enjoyment of archaeological heritage. The MAV is an educational and cognitive place, where the real and the imaginary meet to bring to life new ways of learning and entertainment.
A perfect museum especially for children and young people, because the communication is based on videos, visual paths, various reconstructions, which capture their attention making them immerse themselves among the splendors of that not even too distant past. Just going down the stairs and finding themselves in a large dark room, lit only by screens, with background noises, already excites them and captures all their curiosity. In the next rooms there are images and videos showing the piazzas, the baths, the theater, the domus, and the sumptuous Villa of the Papyri. Voices, music, and even the scents of the era are heard. Strong impact generated by the video Herculaneum 360, in which you find yourself in ancient Herculaneum accompanied by an exceptional guide: the Swiss archaeologist Karl Jacob Weber, and on the way you will meet historical figures among streets and stores.
What attracts the most attention is the 3-D video that recounts what happened on that terrible August day in 79 A.D., whose narrator's voice is precisely that of the volcano. One finds oneself in the midst of lava flows, lapilli rain, ash clouds and seems to relive that catastrophic event. The events have been reconstructed based on Pliny the Younger's letters addressed to the historian Tacitus.
In 2003, the City of Herculaneum and the Province of Naples signed a memorandum of understanding for the redevelopment of the former Iaccarino school building in Herculaneum, earmarking it as the home of the MAV, consisting of virtual reality sets on the history of Neapolitan places. In May 2005, the Province of Naples and the City of Herculaneum established the C.I.V.E.S. Foundation to manage the MAV and related cultural services. The MAV was inaugurated on July 9, 2008. In May 2009, the Campania Region joined the C.I.V.E.S. Foundation.
