Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages in Puglia, Polignano a Mare is a small seaside resort in the province of Bari. A popular destination for many Italian and foreign vacationers, it is known not only for its wonderful beaches, but also for being the birthplace of Domenico Modugno.
The town's historic center features an intricate maze of narrow streets with tall stone houses. One of the town's most touristy spots is Via Traiana, an ancient Roman road that connected Brindisi to Rome. Here stands Ponte Lama Monachile, a bridge built in Bourbon times from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of Polignano.
Nearby there is also the Arco Marchesale, also known as Porta Grande, which is the gateway to the historic center. Polignano a Mare, however, is also renowned for its natural beauty, such as the many sea caves scattered along the coast. The most famous and unmissable ones are Grotta delle Rondinelle, Grotta Azzurra and Grotta dei Fidanzati.
To top it off, there are many beaches made of soft white sand where you can spend many days between sea, sun and relaxation. The most beautiful beach is undoubtedly Lama Monachile, which is a short walk from the center. It consists of a pebble beach and a crystal blue sea. Other beaches popular with tourists are Porto Contessa, San Vito beach, Cala Fetente, Santa Caterina and Cala Sala.
