About this tour
In the collective imagination Naples is depicted by Mount Vesuvius, Posillipo, and its historic alleys with clotheslines stretched out. In this iconography, however, one can also include one of the city's many steep and strenuous stairways, the Petraio. The suburb consists of about 500 steps and became famous thanks to the film The Four Days of Naples.
The hike starts from Vanvitelli Square, that is, from the Vomero, and ends in the Chiaia district. This path of stairs built between the 16th and 18th centuries owes its name to the rocky nature of the land on which they were erected to collect water.
From Via Annibbale Caccavello begins the so-called Petraio, a long set of steps with a central handrail dividing several colorful Art Nouveau buildings. Next is the Largo del Petraio, a point from which the hill slopes down to the sea, with Vesuvius in the background. From the open sea we then move on to the Ascent of the Petraio, full of lemon trees, votive images, basses and steps that become less steep as you approach the intersection with Corso Vittorio Emanuele III.
There is more hustle and bustle here, but once you cross the Corso and turn onto Via San Carlo alle Mortelle, you come across the 17th-century church of the same name. Having then arrived in Piazzetta Mondragone, one continues on Via Santa Caterina da Siena, which a little further down takes the name of Steps of Chiaia.
This tour of the Petraio gardens is a unique and unrepeatable opportunity to enjoy a little escape from the city while still staying in Naples, admiring wonderful landscapes and places often little known to Neapolitans themselves. Don't waste time. Come get to know the Petraio with us!
