The most beautiful public park in Sorrento is its Municipal Villa, built between 1877 and 1879. The space stands on a cliff overlooking the sea, on the gardens of the Franciscan friars, not far from the famous Cloister of San Francesco and the central Piazza Tasso. Its gardens are home to exotic plants and centuries-old trees that give a romantic touch to this unmissable and amazing "balcony" of the city of Sorrento, from which a truly breathtaking panorama can be admired.
Although small, the Municipal Villa of Sorrento is widely frequented by both tourists and visitors. Its infamous beauty comes not only from the tranquil and verdant gardens but also, and more importantly, from the wonderful view from the terrace.
The Villa, not coincidentally, is called the "balcony of the city" precisely because of the magnificent view that sweeps from the Marina Piccola beach below, to the marina, to the entire Bay of Naples, including the ever-present Vesuvius. Peculiar are the long-lived, even centuries-old trees of Pines, Holm oaks, Firs and Palms that stand alongside colorful rose and camellia plants, and the scents of orange trees in bloom, especially in the warmer months.
Perfect place to rest after a walk through the chaotic downtown, or to stop for a moment before continuing to the sea. The inviting benches are favorite spots for couples while the more discerning prefer to enjoy aperitifs at the Villa's bar. There is also a small play area for children and paths where you can walk with your four-legged friend.
The villa has a very long staircase that descends to the sea, with small panoramic terraces surrounded by plants of Lemons, Figs, Pines and Vines; but also the availability to use a public elevator for a fee, the "Sorrento Lift," which allows you to reach hydrofoils, ferries, bathing establishments and the free beach.
Sorrento's Villa Comunale was built between 1877 and 1879 on the gardens of the Franciscan friars.
Two busts from the early 20th century can also be seen in its garden: one dedicated to historian Bartolommeo Capasso and the other to Francesco Saverio Gargiulo.
